The forest looks like untouched nature, but its appearance is deceptive... The Oosterbos of today was a swampy wasteland a century ago. East of Emmen you can find the Emmerdennen, an oasis of peace. Locals call this forest "Klein Zwitserland" – little Switzerland.

Here, you have left the moorland behind you, with the Hondsrug being clearly visible. In the forest, you can come from Germany and visit the first megalithic grave (D45). After Emmerdennen, you will reach the vibrant Emmen city centre.
