Emmen – Exloo
Stage 14
Just behind Emmen is a long grave – a very special megalithic grave which is worth a visit! Once you see the Valtherbos and have left the city of Emmen, you will enter the heart of the De Hondsrug UNESCO Global Geopark.
Order the 2nd edition of the Hünenweg hiking guide from Conrad Stein Verlag. On 127 pages you will find detailed information about your hike from Osnabrück to Groningen.
The glacial landscape of the geest ridge remains largely intact in many places and contains a wealth of remnants from the Ice Ages: forests with many burial mounds, megalithic graves and medieval wagon tracks. The Valtherbos, Hunzebos and Boswachterij Exloo recall times long past. Megalithic Grave D35 stands on a heather field in Valtherbos.
There is also a refuge in the forest where Jews hid during the Second World War. The route leads pasts the ash villages of Valthe and Odoorn. Restaurants and accommodation in both villages invite visitors to stay a while. The route continues through the Hunzebos. On one side there are flat fields surrounded by tall forests.
