Gieten – Zuidlaren
Stage 17
Shortly after Gieten, the route winds through a small forest, the Zwanemeerbos, featuring 26 burial mounds.
Order the 2nd edition of the Hünenweg hiking guide from Conrad Stein Verlag. On 127 pages you will find detailed information about your hike from Osnabrück to Groningen.
You will then reach Drentsche Aa National Park, a romantic meandering glacial valley. The valley is filled with heather and sand dunes as well as alder trees and ash villages with greens and hayfields which turn yellow and red with buttercups and sorrels in spring. Through the forest and alongside fields, the path continues to the church of Anloo, whose tower will have already been visible from afar.

Then you will reach the pretty village of Anloo. The path leads past a large oak tree and the quaint marshlands at Anloërdiepje to the Strubben–Kniphorstbos nature reserve. It is the only archaeological reserve in the Netherlands with numerous archaeological monuments. Under the road (N34), wide sandy paths lead to Zuidlaren.
