Borger – Gieten
Stage 16
Near the Hunebedcentrum, you'll find many megalithic graves as well as a number of burial mounds. After a few kilometres on dirt tracks, you will arrive at the Drouwenerzand nature reserve, which was the first of its kind in Drenthe to receive the status of being a "geological monument".
Order the 2nd edition of the Hünenweg hiking guide from Conrad Stein Verlag. On 127 pages you will find detailed information about your hike from Osnabrück to Groningen.
The nature reserve is covered with sand dunes, heaths, juniper bushes and coniferous forest. With a little luck, you may even run into a flock of sheep!
At the end of the village of Gasselte, there is a pretty, white church with a black roof. Behind it, a low-lying path will lead you through the woodland; it is also popularly called "Ravijn" – the ravine. It is a former field railway line which had to make its way through the Hondsrug. The path is certainly impressive!
We continue from the forest through the open corridor on farm roads across agricultural land and earth walls. Shortly before the village of Gieten, you will clearly be able to see that you are on a geest: the fields here nestle gently up to the slopes in the landscape.
