26 "fusel distillers" were mentioned as early as 1758 – of which 3 distilleries, namely Rosche, Berentzen and Heydt, continue to export high-proof delights to the world to this day. For nostalgics, the historic steam locomotive from 1922 is worth a visit. Bekloh, a suburb of the district capital Meppen, likely contains the oldest church in Emsland, while next door, the restored "Old Bekloh School" is reminiscent of the small dimensions of village schools. In Meppen, the rivers Hase and Radde flow into the Ems, being called the "city by the water – the city in the country". Located on the headland between the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Hase, the Höltingmühle Windmill invites you to stay a while. The route taken by the stage between the two cities offers an idyllic river atmosphere as well as diverse flora and fauna. In the Hasetal trial and development area, efforts have been made to preserve the Hase meadows in a way that remains close to nature, much to the delight of the beaver population. The "Emsland Beavers" were established in 1990 as part of a research project; whose success is proven by the growing population. The observation tower in Lahre offers a picturesque view of the Hase-Altarme oxbow lake.
